What Is Elder Abuse?

An act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.

What to do:

If you feel safe.

PREPARE
PROOF

Document each

incident of neglect or abuse.

PROVIDE
RESOURCES

Offer to help them find the appropriate resources.

PLAN FOR
SAFETY

Create a proper safety plan and plan for leaving.

FILE A
COMPLAINT

Contact the nursing home manager or the police.

CHANGE
CARETAKER

If the caretaker is the issue, change the caretaker IMMEDIATELY.

How to help someone who's experiencing elder abuse:​

  • Prepare proof by documenting each incident of neglect or abuse.

  • Offer to help them find the appropriate resources.

  • ​Help them create a proper safety plan and plan for leaving.

  • If at a nursing home, contact the manager. Otherwise, contact the police.

  • If the caretaker is the issue, change the caretaker IMMEDIATELY.

  • Be sure the individual with hearing loss has proper communication throughout the whole process.
